Reasonable Adjustments

We Are Committed to Accessible Care

At Lee Road Surgery, we are committed to making our services accessible to everyone. We recognise that some patients may need additional support or changes to the way we provide our services in order to access healthcare effectively.

Under the Equality Act 2010, healthcare providers have a legal duty to make reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities. A reasonable adjustment is a practical change that helps remove barriers and ensures people are not placed at a disadvantage when accessing healthcare services.

What Are Reasonable Adjustments?

Reasonable adjustments are changes that help people access healthcare in a way that meets their individual needs.

Examples may include:

  • Longer or double appointments
  • Access to ground-floor consultation rooms where possible
  • Information in large print, Easy Read or alternative formats
  • Communication by text message, email or letter rather than telephone
  • Support from a carer, advocate or family member
  • Access to sign language interpreters
  • Assistance for people with visual, hearing or sensory impairments
  • Support for people with learning disabilities, autism, dementia or mental health conditions
  • Extra time to understand information and make decisions about care

The adjustment needed will vary from person to person, and we will work with you to identify what support is appropriate.

Who Can Request a Reasonable Adjustment?

You may be entitled to a reasonable adjustment if you have a disability, impairment, long-term health condition, learning disability, sensory impairment, autism, dementia, mental health condition, or any other condition that makes it more difficult to access healthcare services.

If you are unsure whether you require a reasonable adjustment, please speak to a member of our team.

Let Us Know What You Need

We encourage patients to tell us about any support they require when:

  • Registering with the practice
  • Booking appointments
  • Attending reviews or health checks
  • Receiving letters, text messages or other communications
  • Being referred to another healthcare service

Our staff will discuss your needs with you and, where appropriate, record these on your medical record so that we can continue to provide the right support in future appointments.

Recording and Sharing Your Reasonable Adjustments

With your consent, information about your reasonable adjustment needs may be securely recorded and shared with other NHS services involved in your care through approved NHS systems. This helps ensure that other healthcare providers are aware of your needs and can provide appropriate support when you access services elsewhere.

Assistance Dogs

We welcome assistance dogs* into the practice and will make reasonable adjustments for patients who rely on them. If you require specific support relating to an assistance dog, please let us know before your appointment where possible. *with the exception of emotional support animals
